SCOTTISH FIRECLAY URNS |
Description: |
|
Lovely pair of 19th century fireclay urns by J.M. Craig with waisted socles on square plinth bases. Featuring foliate top rims and sides cast in raised relief with medieval figures the bases are stamped: J.M Craig...Perceton...Kilmarnock".
The J.M. Craig Company was one of several 19th century potteries doing business in the Kilmarnock region of Scotland where they found the local bedrock clay to be quite durable after the firing process as well as having an attractive lighter coloration. By 1868 J.M. Craig had grown to become the largest pottery in the country producing a range of products both ornamental as well as utilitarian.
