Faux bois which literally means “false wood”, was an art form originating in Europe well over a century ago. It derived from the naturalistic or "Rustic" style that was finding increasing popularity at the time.
In creating pieces of this type several successive layers of a wet cement and aggregate mix were applied around an iron armature and worked by hand while curing. Detailing and scoring to provide the natural wood effects were the final steps in the process.
