Compton Pottery Statue |
Description: |
|
A turn of the century statue of the seated Pan attributed to the Compton Potters Art Guild.
The Compton Potters Art Guild was established in 1895 by Mary Watts, wife of portrait painter and sculpture George Watts. The pottery produced decorative terracotta work with a strong Arts and Crafts influence in the village of Compton (near Guilford) England. Originally organized to produce decoration for a chapel, the pottery continued production of architectural items and garden ornament after completion of the chapel in 1896. The firm's line of garden ornament was marketed by Liberty of London under the Compton label, one of the few vendors Liberty permitted to use its own name.
