French Cast Iron Urns

Description:
Pair of 19th century French Spiral Fluting cast iron urns, the original design by Claude Ballin (1616-1678) for Louis the XIV’s Parterre du Nord, Versailles. The intricate details, which are well reflected in the cast iron models, were originally intended by Ballin to be cast in silver, but financial constraints lead to the urns being completed in bronze. Attributed to the Societe Anonyme des Fondries d’Art du Val D’Osne, this model appears in the firm’s late 19th century catalogs, but was likely produced earlier by one of the members of the consortium.
