French iron bench by Arras |
Description: |
|
An exceptionally large Arras bench bearing the maker’s stamp on the side stretchers of both supports. This type of “demi-tube” seating grew out of the style of hollow tube furniture created in France in the mid-19th century to address the expanding needs of the Paris park system which needed sturdy but light weight, easily movable and attractive seating that could be adapted for a variety of uses. The form quickly became popular in private homes and gardens. The Arras foundry, located in the town or Arras (about one hour north east of Paris) quickly became the preeminent manufacture of this type of furniture.
