Pair Stoneware Urns by Compton |
Description: |
|
A pair of well-weathered early 20th century English garden pots produced by the noted Compton Potter’s Art Guild in the form described as Scroll Pot in the firm’s catalogs.
The pottery, located near Guildford in Surrey, produced both Compton Garden Ware and a separate line of painted but unglazed “indoor pieces”; items such as figurines, bookends, plaques, vases and lamp bases. In addition to being marketed by the pottery, Compton Garden Ware was also sold through the Liberty of London department store.
Interestingly, both pots are impressed with the simpler Potter’s Art Guild mark of a spooked wheel with the initials PAG (used prior to 1936) rather than the larger more frequently seen Compton Garden Ware mark a wheel with entwined Celtic knot.
