PAIR OF FRENCH FAUX BOIS CHAIRS |
Description: |
|
A pair of mid-20th century French faux bois garden chairs. With naturalistically formed crossed back, side arms and legs the addition of moss and lichen add to the realistic effect.
The literal translation of the French "faux bois" is "false wood" and refers to an art form that originated in the late 19th century in France celebrating the naturalistic or rustic style in design which was gaining popularity at the time. Successive layers of a cement and aggregate mix are applied over an iron armature and worked while curing to achieve the effect resembling real wood. The form has maintained its popularity for over a century.
