Pair of 19th Century French Biots

Description:
A near-pair of nicely weathered French terra cotta Biot pots.

Biot pots have been made by hand in the Provencal town of Biot going all the way back to the 16th century and were used primarily for the storage and transportation of olives, oil and sometimes assorted grain. The classic yellow slip glaze around their rims was strategically placed to prevent vermin, bugs and other insects from gaining entry; sometimes a thin piece of cheese cloth affixed to the top as well to also aid in that effort.

Biots make an impressive statement flanking a doorway, used inside or in the garden.

Early 19th century
