French Faux Bois Garden Bench |
Description: |
|
A mid-20th century French faux bois garden seat with a double panel back featuring curved and gnarled supports resembling bark covered branches. The sturdy long plank seat with slightly flared arms sits on three sets of legs. Exceptionally realistic detail throughout with a nicely weathered surface.
Faux bois (literally “false wood”) was an art form originating in Europe well over a century ago. It derived from the naturalistic or rustic style that was finding increasing popularity with the public at the time.
In creating pieces of this type several successive layers of wet cement aggregate are applied and built up around an iron armature. The material is hand worked as it cures with detailing and scoring to provide the natural wood effects as the final steps in the process.
