Large Pair of French Biot Jars |
Description: |
|
A fine pair of large early 19th century French terra cotta biot jars.
Biot is a style of pottery that has its origins dating as far back as the early 16th century and is named after the Provencal town of Biot in the south of France where they were made. Originally used to store oil and grain, Biot jars are often found with glazed rims which due to their slippery nature prevented insects and other creatures from climbing up and going inside.
Biot jars make wonderful containers for larger-type plantings and will work well outside in the garden, patio or pool areas; as well as inside the home.
