19TH CENTURY ENGLISH COALBROOKDALE GARDEN SEAT Description: Ornately cast rare English cast iron bench by the renowned Coalbrookdale foundry, stamped “C B Dale and Co” with pattern number 26 and registration number 104751 and diamond registration stamp. Circa 1870 The double sided version of this pattern is illustrated in the 1875 Coalbrookdale catalogue, section III, page 265 The Coalbrookdale Company founded by Abraham Darby in 1709 in Shropshire is famous for the quality of its ornamental castings in both garden ornament and architectural elements. Most well-known for its garden seating, the firm employed the leading designers of its day, including Christopher Dresser and Jonathan Bell, to produce modern and trend setting designs; an endeavor in which it was most successful as a number of its designs were widely copied on both the continent and in the United States. English patent laws provided protection for decorative designs for three years and the firm registered the majority if not all its seating designs, stamping each piece with the model number and diamond shaped patent registration lozenge.
