Model of the Wallace Fountain |
Description: |
|
An early 20th century wood and composition scale model of the Wallace Fountain, the cast iron original produced by the Val d’Osne Foundry in 1872. Four well modeled female caryatids representing Simplicity, Kindness, Sobriety and Charity stand on a stepped circular ledge support the domed top decorated with stylized dolphins and strands of cascading shells. The weathering of the piece suggests that it has had some outdoor exposure and it does appear that at one time it was plumbed for water.
The British philanthropist Sir Richard Wallace commissioned Charles-August Lebourg to design the fountain and in 1872 gave 50 to the city of Paris to provide drinking water for people strolling through the city. Examples remain in Paris and models have made the way to other locales throughout the world, including Rio de Janeiro
