Unusually Large Pair of Handyside Urns Description: A difficult to find pair of large 19th century tazza form cast iron urns attributed to the English firm of Handyside. With deeply lobed wide bodies these urns afford a considerable amount of interior planting area. Circa:1870 The famous Handyside foundry on Duke Street, Derby, was set up in 1817 by Samuel Weatherhead (1784-1854) an ironmonger and Thomas Glover, producing architectural and ornamental ironwork. In 1847 the company was taken over by Andrew Handyside (1805-1887) a Scot who had been trained in founding by an uncle in St. Petersburg, Russia. Handyside handed over the management of the firm to his nephew, Alexander Buchanan (1829-1912) in 1873, but the firm became insolvent in 1911 and was taken over, continuing until 1931, when it closed. The heyday of the firm’s manufacture of fine urns and fountains, cast in very pure metal to prevent corrosion, was in the 1850s to 1880s and it was known for its ornamental garden vases that were remarkable for their faithfulness to original historical design.
